We show a schematic of the main parts of an EPB shield with segment lining. We can divide all these components into 3 major groups.
The shield and cutting wheel, the back up and finally the train.
THE SHIELD is the main part of the EPB tunnel boring machine. The shield hosts the main bearing of the cutting wheel, the pushing
cylinders and the orientation cylinders that guide the machine, the screw conveyor, the segment erector for building the tunnel support,
etc.

The BACK UP of this type of machine is usually longer than 80 m. In the Back up is located the control cabine, the main engines,
the belt conveyor, ventilation, electrical transformer and all electrical control panels, foam injection equipment and mortar,
as well as the rail ways in which the train will be accommodated, etc.
The TRAIN is driven by a diesel or electric locomotive similar to those used in many mining operations. The trains has all the
necesary wagons for full fill one advance of excavation material. Also the train has a mortar wagon for the filling the gap between the
excavation diameter and outside diameter of the segment. Also it can be included a flat wagon in a train for the transportation
of equipment or personnel wagon.
